Polybutylene Piping - Public Enemy #1

From 1978 to 1995, Polybutylene (PB) piping was installed in millions of homes by plumbing contractors and builders because it was a cheaper alternative to copper. The piping was produced under the names Qest, Thermoguard, and FlexTemp. After 20 or 30 years, some of the pipes may burst. Many homes’ plumbing has been under siege from busted PB pipes for quite some time now. We can send out help as far north as Newport News and Williamsburg, VA. PB piping repair and replacement is no match for the plumbers at A-1 American Services.

Signs it’s Time to Replace that Toilet

Costs of plumbing jobs can be quite intimidating, depending on the project. Fortunately, toilet replacement is a relatively affordable undertaking for the average homeowner. “But how do I know when to replace the toilet vs. simply repairing it?,” you may be asking yourself. A professional plumber who’s familiar with toilet repair and replacement can best advise you. Check out this blog for signs that your toilet may need repair or replacement.

Top Plumbing Myths That Take Cash Out Your Pocket

Unfortunately, many of the plumbing tips passed on from friends and family are actually false. For example, did you know that Drano® is as damaging to your pipes as it is to the source of blockage? This is especially true for some items, such as meat and hair, where Drano and other cleaners like it must work much harder. Discover these and other plumbing myths from our blog.

A Quick History Of Plumbing

Sanitization is the prevention of human contact with toxic wastes. In many ways, the use of plumbing to carry away sewage and other wastes is responsible for saving countless lives. Before indoor plumbing, waste would often be thrown into a nearby waterway, leading to contamination and a variety of diseases. As with many things, the Romans are credited with using the world’s first plumbing systems. They moved wastewater, as well as clean drinking water, using an aqueduct powered mostly by gravity, to and away from major living centers. The Romans are also known for their public baths, which promoted general public hygiene.

Today, we enjoy efficient, comfortable plumbing. Around the beginning of the 20th century, public health authorities began advocating for better removal and disposal of wastes. Sewage treatment plants were soon operational, purifying the wastewater and disposing of it properly. Lead piping was used at first in most buildings. Use of lead pipes declined sharply after World War II, after news of lead poisoning became widespread. Copper piping was later used instead because it’s safer and better then lead.

Plumbing sure has come a long way, from pipes relying on gravity in ancient times to modern-day copper piping using advanced high-pressure systems to control water supply. A-1 American Services, plumbers are experts at any water-related issues that may arise in your home.
