Most homeowners think that they can replace their conventional electric or gas water heater with a tankless water heater with no special upgrades. When it comes to tankless water heaters, there are many benefits, but they do need higher electric amperage and special venting.
- An electric water heater that uses a 240V electrical connection is not sufficient for the much higher amperage rating of a Tankless. A tankless water heater requires more than 3 times the amperage rating.
- The gas tankless water heater also requires special B-Venting or gas/exhaust venting that would be an upgrade from most conventional set-ups. Standard venting cannot be used for a higher BTU usage tankless water heater.
How They Work
According to the Energy Department, “Tankless water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. As a result, tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don’t need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water. However, a tankless water heater’s output limits the flow rate.”
