Hurricanes and Your HVAC Ductwork

Hurricane or flash-flooding tips for homeowners:

  • Make sure all ductwork is off the ground and properly attached.
  • The flex-type duct is not waterproof and will rot.
  • Sheet metal duct also is not watertight and exposing it to water or moisture may promote mold.
  • Sandbagging at basement windows or at the door can help to prevent flooding.

It is very important to note that if a claim is filed to FEMA because of flooding damage to ductwork or an AC system, a licensed contractor CANNOT reinstall the new system and ductwork in the same place as the old equipment. The new duct must be relocated to the attic as well as the air handler and compressor.

Ductwork must be at least as high as the level of the bottom of the windows.
