Maintaining Your Heating System

How do I Maintain my Heating System?

Basic Do It Yourself Heater Maintenance

A well-maintained heating system will provide warm comfort to the home during cool months of the year. Generally, most heating system maintenance  should be left to a professional, but there are a couple of things you can do at home for some basic up-keeping. Before performing any sort of maintenance, first make certain that the power to your heater is shut off.

Changing Air Filters
The air filters used with most HVAC systems can quickly accumulate dust and other particles from your home. When enough of these particles build up, this reduces the efficiency of your system. When in frequent use, air filters should be changed out by two months time. It is a simple procedure to make while the heating system is off. Some filters are reusable while others are disposable. Located near the bottom of your heater, the rectangular filter should easily slide out. Then insert the new filter into place. Check your manufacturer’s manual or the print out on the edge of the filter to see which type is being used. The entire time to switch out the old filter takes only a few minutes. A permanent filter can be cleaned with the use of a vacuum cleaner or a brush. If you rinse clean your permanent filter, make sure it is completely dry before re-installing it into place.

Cleaning Surrounding Dust
Dust and dirt will eventually build up in and around your central heating unit. You can clean the dust off of the vents with a rag or vacuum cleaner hose attachment. Wiping down the outside of the heating and a/c appliance can reduce the amount of dust that would eventually find its way inside of the heating system and ducts. Another consideration while cleaning a heater is to wear a dust mask.

Other components such as the checking or replacing the belts and the lubrication of parts should be best left to the professionals at A-1 Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning. With our assistance in cleaning your heating system from the inside out, and a full tune-up your heater’s performance and longevity will last longer.

Affordability

Cost & Savings
Annual servicing can prolong the life of your heating system. Regular maintenance will keep it functioning efficiently and will save you the high cost of replacing the heating system.
