Going to see a movie or pulling out one of your favorite DVDs is a fun way to escape from day-to-day stresses. However, sometimes these movies contain a bit of stress themselves towards the characters in them at least! While you may hope to avoid big plumbing problems yourself (or at least have an excellent plumber lined up in case you do face them,) the five movies listed below provide a lighter look at plumbing “fails: that you do not want to see in real life.
Dumb and Dumber: One of Jeff Daniels most iconic (and most hilarious) roles is in the 90’s comedy classic Dumb and Dumber. Unfortunately, he finds himself dealing with the woes of a broken toilet”after having a cup of tea laced with laxatives. If Mary’s parents had thought to call a plumber to fix their toilet before the problem occurred, we may have missed out on comedy gold!
Goonies: The plot in the movie The Goonies may have never gotten very far if it was not for plumbing! One of the characters, “The Mouth”, was the son of a plumber giving him the knowledge the gang needed to find the lost tunnel and embark on their adventure. The movie also contains a scene that highlights why you should never mess with your plumbing unless you know exactly what you’re doing, you never know what may happen if you just pound on some pipes.
Super Mario Brothers: What movie featured plumbers (and bumbling plumbers at that) more than the early 90’s movie based on a video game? Super Mario Brothers. John Leguizamo and Bob Hoskins played these Italian brothers who faced great adventure as they wielded their wrenches in the sewers and above ground. Fortunately, unlike with the Mario Brothers, being a plumber doesn’t come with danger like being arrested just for being good at your trade.
The Passionate Plumber: Go back in time to the 1930’s and you find a movie that mentions a plumber right in the title! Famed actor Buster Keeton plays a plumber hired to fix a leaky showerhead. He winds up falling in love with the rich socialite who hired him. While a leaky shower head is certainly not a good thing, this “fail” turned into a “win” for both the plumber and the socialite!
Red Dragon: This movie features a broken toilet that isn’t! A “fake” plumber is sent into Hannibal Lecter’s cell to fix his toilet. This plumber is actually searching the cell for hidden information and codes to help the FBI solve a crime and find “The Red Dragon.” Luckily, in real life you seldom have to worry about a fake plumber showing up at your house, especially if you are working with a reputable company.
As you can see, plumbing fails and other issues have had a major impact on the plots of a number of movies ranging from funny modern hits to suspenseful action flicks to beloved classics. Hopefully, next time you find yourself needing to call a plumber it is a simple problem that can be fixed without too much drama.
